Growing around the obstacle

Have you ever seen a tree that sprang from a seed dropped too close to a boulder? The resilience of the tree is astonishing, able to grow roots around the stone and find living water in the distant soil. The boulder becomes a part of the tree’s foundation. What was once an obstacle has become a support in the organic structure.

Be careful what stones you try to remove from your roots. You may discover that the very problem you have been excavating is actually necessary to support the weight of your cantilevered branches. Everything grows in relationship with everything else over the years – I have become unstable at my very roots and now the over-story is toppling over. Timber.

  1. Mother Adrien, Thinking of you- Forever in my prayers🙏🏼 Sending thoughts of peace and light to you and your family… God’s peace. On this Ash Wednesday 7 years ago , you prayed with me as my Mom was called to her heavenly home! I am grateful for you, as you have been such a blessing in my life. Know that you mean so much to me and many others for all that you do, and for all that you are🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

  2. I work w/ small trees. You can do a lot to a tree, w/ a tree, & for a tree, and it survives and even thrives. Not every season marked by rings is equal and some are better than others, but over a lifetime, the rings tell a story of beauty – withstanding hard times (droughts & floods), attacks (winds, pests & fire), difficult paths (root over rock), yet also growing w/ friends, shading other friends, providing a home for others, eventually blocking the wind and weather for the more vulnerable. Even those that finally do break re-sprout from a mighty trunk, often w/ multiple sprouts. Trees show us resilience in the most conspicuous way. Resilience, though not easy, is life and light and a path to a more peaceful, balanced, fuller, giving, receiving, confident, joyful life. The wind will buffet you, but you will be ok. You are resilient. You are loved, you are not alone, you are in a forest of other trees (that you help shape) and that will help nurture your roots. The other trees want to count you among the many, want to reach for the sun w/ you, and always value your company and shade. Weather (life) hits all of us, nevertheless, we will grow together.
